The 3 outerwear staples this season

Fall is my favorite season of the year because you can play with layers and still easily look effortlessly chic or elegant. Come winter, it’s more layers and less elegance.

If you’ve been following me, then you’d already know about my appreciation for classic pieces that are versatile and well-made. Wardrobe essentials are only true essentials when they don’t immediately become outdated pieces by the following year. Unlike many fast fashion brands, slow fashion brands tend to spend more time making sure every detail is made to last — hence why I stopped buying from brands like Zara and H&M.

If you’re looking to invest in quality outerwear pieces that you can wear this season, and potentially throughout the year (depending on where you live), read on to check out the 3 staples I think everyone should own in their closet.

A classic trench coat

My mom has a trench coat that is more than 15 years old. I love seeing her wearing that same piece in different stages of her life.

Timeless and never out of style, a trench coat is a must.

This one from w awake, a slow fashion brand from Los Angeles, is a great option for frequent travelers because it’s lightweight, easy to pack, and a great wind breaker. I wore mine to Milan and I was able to pack it in my hand luggage!

A wool coat or cape

Wool is a natural fabric that is breathable and extremely durable.

This wool cape is one of my personal favorites — I call it my subtle statement piece — because I can layer it over a t-shirt but I can also layer it over another jacket, which means it can be worn for many months throughout the cooler seasons.

Handmade in Italy by Marta Scarampi, this cape uses biodegradable wool and that’s another reason why I adore this piece. If pink isn’t your shade, no worries — the cape comes in a lot more colors!

A casual & chic shirt jacket

I own a lot of oversized shirts because I’ve always liked throwing them over tank tops or t-shirts. But a shirt jacket is even better because they tend to be thicker, which means they can be worn for more occasions.

This shacket is a good one because despite it being a casual piece, the gold buttons dresses it up, ensuring it never is sloppy.

In another blog post, you can check out how I styled a leather shacket 4 different ways.
