The 4 wellness habits that has given me a healthier scalp

About 18 months ago, I had my son. And like many new moms, I started experiencing hair loss about 3, 4 months postpartum. I knew it was common and normal so I wasn’t too worried but after nearly a year of still dealing with hair loss and other issues like itchy, dry scalp, I decided it was time to really focus on taking care of my scalp.

In the beginning of my journey, I started with something simple: I changed up my shampoos and conditioners. That helped but I wanted to take a step further with my scalp care routine. I tried a few things and these 4 wellness habits were the ones that successfully stuck with me:

  1. Diet + supplements

I spoke to my acupuncturist one day about my scalp issues and the first thing she mentioned was gut health because gut health and scalp health are in fact closely linked. When your gut microbiome is balanced, it can help prevent scalp issues including dandruff. So that got me thinking, perhaps I can start there!

I started having more foods that restore good bacteria in the gut like yogurt and bananas especially for breakfast, and adding healthy fats that are important for scalp and hair, such as salmon, sardines and chia seeds. I avoided food that are over-processed and decreased excess sugar, too.

In addition to that, I also started taking some collagen gummies, too. My current favorite is from YINA.

2. use scalp serum regularly

Once a week, I apply VEGAMOUR’s GRO Scalp Detoxifying Serum on my scalp before I shampoo my hair. The serum is designed to remove impurities and build-up and absorb the oils from your scalp so that when you wash your hair, your scalp can actually breathe and feel refreshed. In other words, it allows your roots to “wake up” and grow healthier hair.

I like this product a lot because, first of all, VEGAMOUR uses clean ingredients which means no harsh chemicals that will further harm your scalp. It’s so easy to use and I do see real results. And if you dye your hair like I do, it’s also color-safe!

P.S. This product won Women’s Health Healthy Hair Award in 2023!

3. head massages with a gua sha tool

I have my mom to thank for this healthy scalp habit because she’s a firm believer in head massages. It improves blood circulation, brings oxygen to your hair follicles and promotes hair growth. Head massages have also been known to remove dead skin cells, and product build-up and reduce dandruff, too.

But honestly, even if you feel like it doesn’t do anything for your hair, at least it relaxes you, helps alleviate stress, and is just overall a great self-care practice to incorporate into your routine.

4. protect your scalp from the sun

I’ve always used sunscreen on my face and body but I’ve only recently realized how important it is to protect my scalp from the sun, too!

Not sure if I’m the only person to think so but I thought having a lot of hair means that my scalp isn’t so exposed to UV rays. I’ve been wrong, of course, because hair actually provides very little protection. Sun exposure can lead to dry and rough scalp — and we don’t want that!

This means wearing a hat or a cap, preferably with UV protection, or using a scalp and hair mist with SPF such as the Scalp & Hair Sunscreen & Color Protection Mist with SPF 30 by COOLA.
