When winter rolls around, there’s one item that inevitably becomes a constant in our daily outfits – the winter coat. But let’s face it, no matter how many cute outfits you put together underneath, your coat is what people see most of the time. It can feel repetitive like you’re showing up in the same look every day. The trick? Style the coat itself!
With a few creative tweaks, you can make that same winter coat look slightly different, feel fresh, chic, and endlessly versatile. It’s my way of maximizing what I already own and I think it’s how outfit repeaters, like myself, have fun with their wardrobe.
Here are my 4 favorite ways to give my coat a stylish “makeover:”
Add Wrist Cuffs for a Chic Upgrade
A simple yet impactful way to change the vibe of your coat is by adding wrist cuffs to the sleeves. Faux fur, knit, or even velvet cuffs can instantly elevate the look and add a touch of fanciness. The wrist cuffs I own are faux fur and I have them in 2 colors. It’s a subtle detail that packs a punch, giving your coat an upgraded, luxurious feel without breaking the bank.
2. Swap Out the Belt for a Unique Twist
Many winter coats come with a matching belt, but swapping it out can completely transform the silhouette and style.
Try replacing the coat belt with a skinny leather one for a sleek, structured look. For something softer and more romantic, use a silk scarf instead.
A fun tip? Tie the silk scarf at the back for an unexpected, elegant touch that feels effortlessly chic.
3. Layer with a Blanket Scarf
This is hands-down my favorite hack — and a total game-changer! Drape a large blanket scarf over your coat and secure it with the coat belt or a belt of your choice. It creates the illusion of a brand-new layer, making your coat look fresh and cozy. Plus, it adds texture and extra warmth, perfect for those super cold days. It’s such a simple trick, but it completely changes the overall vibe of your outfit.
My favorite blanket scarves are from Sézane. They have a beautiful selection and sometimes the scarves come with matching beanies, too.
4. Let a Blazer or Jacket Peek Through
For a little added dimension and contrast, layer a blazer or jacket under your coat. Let the collar and sleeves peek out for a pop of color and structure. This layering technique adds depth and makes your winter look more dynamic. Opt for a contrasting color to really make the layers stand out.
Winter fashion doesn’t have to feel monotonous. By focusing on the outer layer and getting creative with styling, you can create multiple fresh looks from the same coat.
Which of these ideas are you excited to try first? Let me know in the comments — I’d love to see how you transform your winter coats!
