In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage month, I decided to use my platform to shine the spotlight on some of my favorite slow fashion brands founded by Asian American women. In case you’re unsure what slow fashion means, here’s a quick explanation.

As a Taiwanese American myself, I can imagine it wasn’t all that easy to grow up in an Asian household with the goal of becoming a designer or a fashion business owner. They’ve likely been asked to consider jobs in finance, law, or medicine instead at least once in their lifetime.

So here’s celebrating their heritage as well as their persistence in making their dream come true. Read on to learn more about the slow fashion brands.

Named after their mother Phannary, Nary was founded by 3 sisters in the middle of the pandemic in May 2020. It started as a way to give back to Cambodia, where their mother was born.

Founded in 2016, Veerah is a sustainable luxury shoe brand based in New York City; the founder Stacey Chang was originally from Taipei, Taiwan.

Created by two sisters, Julie and Connie, who grew up in the footwear industry and are sustainability advocates, AVRE offers comfortable shoes made from recycled materials.
