If you follow me on Instagram, you may have come across my recent pregnancy announcement! I’m currently 18 weeks pregnant and I’m grateful that everything’s been going well so far despite feeling sleepy all the time and some discomfort here and there.
Ever since I learned about my pregnancy in March, I became more conscious of what food I’m eating and more mindful of what products I’m putting on my face and body. As some of you may know, I already tend to lean towards clean, sustainable brands but I double-check if the products are pregnancy-safe.
Because my already dry skin became super duper dry since I got pregnant, I had to start layering a face oil under (and over) a moisturizer to avoid peeling. Now, I do own quite a few facial oils but which ones should I continue using throughout my pregnancy? And which ones are actually moisturizing enough to keep my skin at bay?
Skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy
Well, first and foremost, consult with your doctor about what's best for you because everyone is different. There’s been a lot of debate and depending on which country you’re from, you may have been told different things.
As a general rule, based on my own research, I know pregnant women should definitely avoid products with ingredients such as retinoids (like retinols), salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide.
According to Lin Chen, Founder & CEO of wellcare brand Pink Moon, it is best to stay away from any products that are high in essential oils — more than 1%, to be exact. She also added: “Avoid chemical sunscreens — SPFs that contain oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, or octinoxate — as well as products with formulas that contain high concentrations of salicylic acid.”
Lin is also a friend and her vast knowledge of clean beauty products and decade-long experience in the sustainable beauty industry make her my go-to “skincare encyclopedia.”
My favorite pregnancy-safe face oils for everyone (whether you’re pregnant or not!)
Have you tried any of these face oils before? Let me know if you have or if you haven’t, when you do, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
