4 amazing beauty tools I didn't know I needed in my self-care routine

I have an unpopular opinion about jade rollers — I’ve never found them to be particularly useful. Most of the time, I just use it for relaxing purposes when I have a sheet mask on; they just didn’t do much for me otherwise. But like any skincare enthusiast, I didn’t stop searching for beauty tools that actually work for me and fulfill my needs.

My skincare and wellness concerns

Before we dive in and go through my favorite tools, I want to share my biggest skincare and wellness concerns with you first because this may help you understand why I find certain tools more “helpful” than others.

  • Firstly, I suffer from water retention easily due to poor circulation and most often from eating salty food. Whenever I drink water too close to bedtime, have alcohol, eat salty food (including pho, pasta, pizza, burger, and fries), I most certainly will wake up with a puffy face — yeah, not just “puffy eyes” like most people. I, therefore, prioritize anything that helps with lymphatic drainage.

  • Secondly, I get headaches and a lot of tension between my eyes. So the next most important element I look for in a beauty tool is how I can use it to gently release tension.

  • Lastly, because my face is round, it’s important to me that the tool can help with the sculpting of my jawline!

Gua Sha Acupressure spoon.jpeg

The Acupressure Gua Sha Spoon

In my opinion, this sculpting tool is so underrated! I first learned about it from attending a virtual event with Asian female-owned beauty brand Mount Lai; the founder Stephanie Zheng showed us how to use this gua sha spoon.

The tool is designed for deeper massages and for gently releasing facial and jaw tension through acupressure. Use the bigger end to sculpt the cheeks, and the smaller end to press on trigger points and massage in a circular motion.

The spoon has been stored in its box on my desk instead of in my vanity drawer because I’ve often been reaching for it when I take little breaks in between a workday.

Every product from Mount Lai comes in its own dedicated “home”and a little pamphlet showing you how to use the tool.

Bian Stone Body Gua Sha Tool

Although I do have several gua sha tools that I love, this one that’s made of natural and authentic Bian stone has recently topped my list of favorites because it’s designed to be used on the body.

Inspired by the ancient practice of Chinese Medicine, which my grandma and my mom have regularly incorporated into their wellness routine, this massage tool helps with circulation.

Because I have stiff shoulders, I mostly use this gua sha tool (the wavy edge) on my neck down to my shoulders, and under my arms, too. Because ultimately, they’re all connected!

Before using the tool, be sure to apply a layer of body oil or lotion — I’m currently loving this amazing body balm — so that the stone can glide onto your skin smoothly.

The Ice Roller by Kitsch

One thing I really look forward to in the morning lately is enjoying my cup of coffee with a side of ice rolling; I grab the ice roller from my fridge with one hand and grab the oat milk for my coffee with the other.

Made with surgical stainless steel, this roller helps to wake my skin by increasing blood circulation and to de-puff under the eye area. It also calms inflammation and aids in firming skin. I find the cooling effect so refreshing and now that the weather is getting warmer, I know I will just be using it way more.

The Rose Quartz Tension Melting Massager by Mount Lai

This beauty tool is another form of a roller; except, it’s designed to deeply knead into the skin and muscles to sculpt and add more definition to facial features.

As mentioned, one of my concerns is a less-defined jawline, so when I use this massager, I tend to focus on my chin and down to the neck area.

The double rollers and handle design allow it to easily reach the back of the neck, making it a great neck massaging tool, too.
