The hair products that make me look like I have good hair genes

It always makes me so happy when I get “I love your hair” type of compliments. I’ve always enjoyed caring for my hair and loved styling it.

After I had my son, my scalp and hair changed. My scalp is now more sensitive and dry, my hair falls flat easily, and the ends of my hair breaks more easily. It took me a while to re-learn what works for me again. In this blog post, I’m sharing some of the best hair care products I’ve tried that has helped me take that “she’s got good hair genes” look.

These are the products that have genuinely earned a permanent place in my current hair care routine:

The Leave-in Soothing Scalp Serum by Jooy

My scalp can be so dry and itchy, especially in the winter. But even in warmer weather, like after swimming in the pool, for instance, I would find myself needing to relieve itchiness and discomfort. And this leave-in scalp serum does exactly that. It’s nothing complicated, but just a serum that works and you can rely on.

Before I found this product, I used to use a facial mist, which, of course, didn’t always give me the results I was hoping for.

Instant Volumizing Leave-in Mist with Rose Water by Christophe Robin

One of the main reasons I cut my hair short (I used to have really long hair) was because my hair would fall flat so, so easily. And yes, that’s how much it bothered me. So I’ve tried a few products that are made with the intention to add volume and although some may have helped a little, nothing makes me see the visual difference immediately more than this mist by Christophe Robin.

I also love this product because it’s lightweight, smells amazing (it uses rose water), and it’s very straightforward to use. You can also use it almost anytime, whether your hair is damp or dry, which is why I would reach for it more often, too!

AirWash™ Dry Shampoo by K18 Hair

This is a very unique product! It's the dry shampoo that completely changed my expectations of what a dry shampoo can do. Most dry shampoos I've tried before would cover up oily roots but this one actually absorbs both oil and sweat without leaving behind the typical white cast or that annoying gritty, starchy feeling. My hair still feels soft, lightweight, and touchable, which is something I rarely experience with traditional dry shampoos.

What really sets it apart is this technology called odorBIND™ smart-release. Instead of just masking bad odors with a stronger fragrance (which sometimes smells even worse, to be honest), it recognizes and neutralizes the odor-causing molecules, so then your hair can genuinely smell fresh throughout the day. It works for me for the entire day, and often the next day, too. It's especially helpful after a workout or being at the playground with my toddler, for instance, or on busy days when I just don't have time to wash my hair but still want it to feel clean.

I also love that it's a non-aerosol formula, so a little goes a long way, and there's no heavy buildup weighing my hair down. Over time, it's also designed to help support a healthier scalp by balancing excess sebum, which makes it a really great option if you're trying to extend the time between washes without compromising how your hair looks or feels.

The Water Boi Leave-In Conditioner Spray by Fenty Hair

I’ve used leave-in conditioner sprays before, but this one surprised me. After I had my son, my postpartum hair became easily tangled. Initially, I simply used this with the intention of softening my hair. But then I realized it really helps with detangling, too! It made brushing out my hair very stress-free and smooth.

It’s also designed to protect your hair against heat, so I’ve been using this spray right before I blow-dry my hair to avoid damage. And the scent is subtle, not too strong, just the way I like it.

Scalp & Hair Mist Sunscreen by COOLA

I've actually gone through several bottles of this scalp SPF mist. I try to wear a hat whenever I can, but there are plenty of days when I'd just rather not. A few summers ago, I decided to skip the hat one time and ended up with a sunburned scalp. That was enough to convince me to start using a sunscreen mist on my scalp whenever it's exposed.

I love this one because it never feels greasy and it offers SPF 30 protection. I do wish it is SPF 50 sometimes, but I can’t complain! Beyond protecting your scalp from the sun, it actually also helps prevent color from fading. Since I dye my hair, I've noticed my hair doesn't lighten from sun exposure nearly as much as it used to, which has been a really nice bonus, in my opinion.

Have you tried any of these products before? If you haven’t, let me know if you do! I’m curious to know what you think.
