The 5 accessories that can easily change up a basic outfit

Anyone living in Manhattan would understand why it’s important to have a versatile wardrobe. Since space is limited, my closet can only fit so much. This is why about 70% of my wardrobe consists of “classic basics,” and 30%, trending or statement pieces; the combination allows me to easily mix and match and create multiple looks. But to further maximize what I own, I like to change up the same outfit with small accessories — and I don’t mean jewelry!

Not only can the smaller accessories save space, but they can also be more interchangeable, and oftentimes, more affordable, too.

Read on to learn about my 5 go-to “outfit-changing” accessories and how I incorporate them into my looks.

  1. Removable collars

Big collars haven’t been trending for a while until recently, and I’m personally loving it! I especially adore the oversized style by Ganni, which comes in various mixes of fabrics and colors including burgundy leather, organic cotton in white, blue denim, and more.

The accessory adds texture to an outfit and an illusion of multiple layers. It also makes a simple combination like a t-shirt over jeans more interesting.

I layered the collar over my cashmere + jeans outfit to elevate the casual look with a touch of sophistication.

The collar can easily be added over other tops, dresses, and coats; it’s a versatile accessory that is absolutely season-less.

2. Wide belts

Because I don’t have a good proportion — I’m literally a 50/50, which means my legs are really short for my height — I have always used belts to “fix the problem.” Adding belts over blazers or dresses is an easy way to fake the position of your waistline and elongate the bottom half.

Although corset belts are trending right now, I find regular, wider belts to be more complimenting and far more practical. They’re also a lot more comfortable. Sometimes I like to search for vintage belts on The RealReal because you can find a lot of unique designer belts there. Alternatively, you can opt for belt bags, too!

3. Statement socks

I never used to style socks because I didn’t really know how to. But since I discovered the beauty (and fun) of styling socks and sandals, I realized they are one of the best ways to change up a vibe of a look. They can easily add a pop of color, fun prints, or texture to an outfit.

Unique fashion socks

I wore this pair of blue shimmery socks with an all-black monochrome outfit — I’m not great at styling prints so pairing the socks with my heels was actually a nice, subtle alternative for me to test it out. I thought the final look turned out to be wittier.

The best part about the socks is being able to dress them up and down for various occasions, too!

4. Gloves

This would mostly apply to the winter unless you want to give sheer gloves or lace gloves a try! I actually dug out all my gloves this winter because of COVID — wearing them ensures that I have less direct contact with public surfaces. But even before, I liked using gloves to add colors and “new sleeves” to winter coats that come in darker colors.

The right pair of gloves can sometimes be the key to complete a look and tie everything together, too.

By the way, if you’re thinking of rocking the trending knitted mittens like the ones our dear Bernie Sanders was wearing at the inauguration, you can click here to check out similar styles I found!

5. Scarves

A few years ago, I wrote a blog post on how to style silk scarves in 6 ways. But there are definitely more ways to incorporate scarves into your outfits depending on the material and shape.

Blanket scarves are currently being used the most because when we’re dining outdoors and don’t want to keep our big coats on, I would wrap them around my shoulders to stay warm. And if you add a belt over the blanket scarf, for instance, you can also transform it into something that resembles a sweater or a poncho. Personally, I think a quality, cashmere or wool scarf is definitely worth the investment.
