Styling socks and sandals: 5 reasons why you need to master it

Okay, to be honest, I only really started learning how to style socks recently. And it was fellow content creator and friend Mary Gui from @layersofchic_ who inspired me to really get into it when she launched her fashion-sock brand called Sock Candy about 5 months ago!

It’s actually crazy to think that she started a new business in the middle of a pandemic, but despite it being a challenging year, her fashion socks have already captured a lot of media attention, including VOGUE and Popsugar!

Designed with the socks + sandals pairing in mind, Sock Candy’s socks feature whimsical prints, beautiful colors, and feminine textures.

In July when the business launched, Mary was kind enough to gift me several pairs of her stylish socks. Initially, I started styling them with my shoes and sandals simply because I wanted to post some photos on Instagram and support her brand. One of my first few photos was actually just of the socks because I wasn’t really sure how to pair them with my shoes yet! Gradually, over the next few months, I started picking up a few inspirational tricks from seeing how other people styled the same Sock Candy socks.

And now — I wouldn’t say I’ve mastered it, but I’m certainly loving it and having so much fun. If you haven’t tried styling socks and shoes because you’re unsure about it, read on to find out why you should just go for it!

1. You get to wear your sandals all year long

I used to put all my sandals away in the winter because my feet would not be happy if I wear sandals in New York in January. But when I wear them with thicker socks like this pair with a butterfly print, I keep my feet warm and I basically turn my sandals into booties! These socks are 9 inches in height which offers more coverage, too.

2. It’s an easy way to add a pop of color to your outfit

When doing a monochrome or an all-black outfit like the one I have here, wearing socks like this blue shimmer pair is a great and easy way to add a pop of color to an otherwise ordinary (or dull?) winter outfit.

3. It’s also a great way to add texture

I love wearing different textures in one outfit and creating more depth to a look — silk with velvet, denim with leather, for instance. And I didn’t realize it before but this concept totally applies to socks, too!

This pair of romantic sheer socks is my absolute favorite out of the entire collection. I thought it made my suede mules so much prettier!

4. They give an outfit more character

Socks may be a small accessory, but I quickly learned that they have the great ability to change up the outfit’s vibe and give a look some “personality!”

I felt like this pair of sheer socks, for example, added a lot more soft, feminine characters to my white platform heels.

5. You don’t have to worry about getting your pedicure done

Okay, I have to admit this isn’t as cute of a reason but it’s a practical one! I used to always stress over having my pedicure done when I wear sandals because they are ultimately a part of the “sandals look.” But hey, cute socks to the rescue! No more bad pedicure days.

Bonus reason: The best way to try out prints

And finally, one extra reason shared by Mary herself!

“If you want to try out prints but don't want to commit to a full-on printed look just yet, giving printed socks a try is a good way to test it out!” — Mary Gui, Founder of Sock Candy.
