4 trendy ways to style the collar that most of you voted to "return"

After seeing so many of my favorite stylish icons rocking the oversized collar trend, I searched for and bought myself a detachable one, too. Well, I actually got two because the first one I ordered back in November didn’t work out; the material and color didn’t seem the right fit for me and my friends convinced (more like begged) me to return it.

Then last month I found another style made simply with white organic cotton that I actually liked a lot more. I shared it on Instagram Stories and asked my followers to vote whether to return it or keep it.

The majority voted “No, return it” — in fact, it was at one point 100% “No,” and my friend said it reminded her of Gretchen in Mean Girls when she tried to make “fetch” happen. Ha! Well, in the end, I decided to be “rebellious” and kept it anyway because I really liked it and knew I could create multiple looks with it.

So in this blog post, I’m sharing 4 ways to style the accessory.

  1. Layer it over sweaters

Adding the oversized collar is a simple way to elevate a basic casual outfit with a touch of sophistication. On zoom calls, the collar makes the sweater less loungewear-like and gives the look a scholarly vibe, too.

Depending on the style and the material, sometimes layering a shirt under sweaters can create unwanted folds, creases, or bulkiness which I prefer to avoid. So I love that with the collar, I’m able to create the illusion of wearing a shirt underneath without actually doing so. It works whether the sweater is tight or loose, too.

2. Change up the look of your outerwear

Most of the time in the winter, only our outerwears get the most exposure, so I like finding ways to dress up my coats and change up the looks of my jackets.

I’ve been loving my pink wool cape and decided to add the collar to it when I styled the cape with a white top. I kind of like how the collar has this inverted v-shape that is also visible at the sleeve openings; it also reflects the overall shape of the cape, too.

The cape is handmade in Italy using 100% biodegradable wool so it’s a great transitional piece and perfect for early spring. I think especially paired with the white — I’m ready to check out all the cherry blossom trees!

3. Double up on the collars

Double the collars, double the trouble? No, of course not. Double the fun!

I remember when I was looking for styling ideas, I came across a few fashion icons layering the collar on another collar. I never would’ve thought of that myself because up till then, I only focused on adding to pieces that “lacked a something” around the neckline. But I loved the idea of further emphasizing the existing collar, so I decided to give it a try, too!

I tested it out with a few shirts and although I did like the look, I ended up loving how it looked on this midi dress. Mainly because the texture is different — instead of cotton on cotton, for instance — and it almost felt like the original collar detail was the added piece. It had an interesting effect!

I also really adore the blue and white combination; the white popped a lot more against the floral print, too.

4. Use it to add texture to plain tops

I do like clean, minimal looks but I also adore outfits that feature different textures. Adding the white removable collar to a white top, for instance, allows me to have that balance of both. I also have a rounder face so the shape of the collar diverts the attention a little bit — which the crew top wouldn’t have been able to do.
