My color of hope for 2021

As some of you may already know, the Pantone Color of 2021 is a set of two colors this year — the neutral Ultimate Gray and vibrant yellow Illuminating. With the importance of sharing the message of strength and togetherness this year, the two independent colors highlight how different elements can also become a harmonious pair. And personally, I really like this concept because I believe we don’t put enough emphasis on the need to appreciate and celebrate differences.

According to Pantone's press release, Ultimate Gray encourages "feelings of composure, steadiness, and resilience." And due to its correlation with the sun, yellow has often been associated with "cheerfulness" and "happiness," so the combination really speaks to the optimism, hope, and positivity that we need in the coming months, as we reset and reinvent ourselves.

Although I do love the concept, I find myself not being able to associate with both hues as much as I’d like to. While I do see yellow as a joyful hue, I personally don’t relate to it as a color of hope. Instead, I’ve been inspired to think about what really is my color of hope for the year.

The inspiration came from my favorite non-toxic nail care brand sundays studio. As part of their January campaign, the brand is encouraging everyone to share their color of hope and the reasoning behind it. I shared it with sundays studio’s audience via Instagram but wanted to share it here with you as well.

A nude shade — but why?

In 2021, my personal goal is to find a sense of stillness. It’s ironic because physically, we’ve been more “still” than ever. But I’m sure many of you can relate to how challenging it can be to feel calm the past several months. When I think about what has always worked for me when I’m feeling stressed and anxious, the answer always leads to — talking to my mom.

Perhaps a part of the reason why I’ve had a hard time finding peace within myself is not being able to see my family. It’s been over a year now since I last saw my mom, and that’s the longest time we’ve ever been apart from one another.

Even though my mom is really more of a worrier, she always finds strength and the will to provide me with comfort whenever it’s needed. She helps make the bumpy road appear to be a smoother ride; she brings the sun to me when I struggle to find the light.

And that’s why my color of hope is a nude color, similar to No. 3 by sundays studio — because that’s known to all of us in my family as “my mom’s color.”

My color of hope: Shade No. 3

People always say my mom and I have very similar looking hands. That’s why when I have her favorite nude shade like sunday studio’s color No. 3 on my nails, it reminds me of my mom.

And to me, my mom is the best source of comfort and warmth — she represents hope to me.

Color of joy

Having said that, I’m not giving up on Illuminating, the yellow shade that represents cheerfulness. It ultimately is a happy shade and the bright hue gives me a boost of energy.

So far, the best wearable pieces that I’ve found in the color is via one of my favorite slow fashion brands — Marta Scarampi. The brand offers a handmade leisure cape made of biodegradable wool and it also comes with matching hair accessories. So if you’re in search of this Pantone color of the year, check them out.
