When The Old Meets New, Featuring the 20's Fashion
Happy 2020, everyone!
The “20’s” used to generally refer to the decade of 1920’s — and now, we’re entering a whole new “20’s.” In celebration of the arrival of a new decade, I decided to do a "#throwback by a century and create three different 1920’s-inspired looks with what I already own in my closet!
I don’t actually have a lot of vintage pieces, except for my grandfather’s blazer. So in the process of putting the outfits together, I was genuinely and pleasantly surprised how simple it was to style modern-day items for an outfit that can so easily appear to be from 100 years ago. The only thing that really needed special “tweaking” was my hair, so I asked hair stylist Yukina to help me create those chic, old-school finger waves!
Scroll down to see the three 1920’s-inspired looks:
The First Look | Subtle Gatsby Vibes
The first look features a pure silk gown by Maggie Wu Studio, a beautiful sweater vest with crystal embellishments by Kobi Halperin, a pearl clutch by Cult Gaia, and a pair of satin pumps by Malone Souliers.
Silk radiates a luxurious undertone which I felt was the right amount of glam I wanted to go for. I layered the vest with bling-bling pockets over to add texture to the look and also give it the subtle “Gatsby” vibe. The pearl chandelier earrings echo the pearl bag. Everything was kept in the same color group.
The silk gown has been worn as a wedding dress by many minimal brides; I personally wore it for a holiday event last year. I received the vest as a gift from Kobi Halperin’s team for NYFW last season; I styled it over a sheer dress and belted the vest.
The Second Look | Channeling The Changeling
Inspired by a few of Angelina Jolie’s costumes in the Prohibition era film The Changeling, the second look features a polka dot dress by Endless Rose, a reversible coat and bucket hat from Petite Studio, and a handbag by Benedetta Bruzziches.
When customer designer Deborah Hopper was creating looks for Angelina Jolie in the movie, she used a lot of soft peach tones to reflect the feminine side and darker red, brown hues to emphasize the strong working woman. So I tried my best to incorporate those colors to achieve that balance as well.
I actually wore the meshed midi dress with the white sweater vest as shown above. I’ve also styled the dress by layering a denim jacket for a casual look several times. And check out how the bucket hat looks on me when I wear it in “the modern day” here.

The Third Look | The Lady with Power
I created the third look with a then-#girlboss in mind, and this is the outfit that features my grandpa’s tailor-made blazer that my mom re-tailored a little to fit me better.
Under the blazer I wore a simple navy blue dress from ASOS that I used to wear to work, and tiered pearl necklaces I found at a flea market; both were bought many years ago. My chic and comfortable pearl pumps were a gift from Bella Belle Shoes and I thought they went perfectly with the outfit.
